Chapter Seven

Two days later, Gidget pulled open her front door after the bell rang and felt her brains steam out of her ears. Holy mother of hormones! Did River have to look so jaw-dropping, panty-wetting good in his fire department uniform? He wasn’t wearing his PFEs, of course—his personal protective equipment—but the navy blue cargo-style slacks and matching navy blue T-shirt with the Maltese cross surrounded by the words Cherish Fire Department embroidered above his left pec was enough to zap her with more electric current than a defibrillator.

“Good afternoon, gorgeous.”

It took more effort than it should have to pry her tongue from where it had instinctively lodged against the roof of her mouth to keep from falling out and letting the drool spill. “Did you just get off work?”

His shift had ended hours ago. Or, at least, it should have. So, why was he still in his totally-shouldn’t-be-turning-her-on uniform?

He glanced down at himself and gave his attire a dismissive shrug. “I’ve been running errands since the shift ended and haven’t taken the time to change.”

“What kind of errands?” She wasn’t meaning to be nosy, but she needed a moment to collect herself and get her brain firing on all cylinders again.

“A little of this. A little of that,” he answered vaguely. “I was headed home from the automotive store and decided to detour down your street to see if you were home. When I saw your car in the drive, I thought I’d drop in.”

The fitness classes she taught on Tuesdays started early and were over by two, leaving her the rest of the day free. Feeling her composure start to gather itself again, she pursed her lips. “Got bored and came looking for entertainment?”

His lips tilted in a too-sexy, too-irresistible grin. “I’ll definitely go with that, if you’re offering. It sounds better than the options I had in mind.”

“And what did you have in mind?”

He hooked his thumbs in the front pockets of his slacks and rocked back on the heels of his boots. “Well, you can help me change the oil in the truck, or I can put that off until tomorrow and we can go for a drive.”

“Where is Slade?” If River was at all affected by her asking about the other man, he didn’t show it.

“He’s probably home by now. He’s been running errands today, too. We can swing by to check and drag him along with us if you want.”

Gidget shook her head as understanding dawned. “I was just curious.”

So, the men had decided this was River’s day to weasel some time alone out of her. She was almost willing to bet her Camaro on it. They were tag teaming, taking turns, and…what? Waiting to see if either of them would come out the victor?

No, she doubted that. They weren’t in competition over her. They wanted to share her.

She started to tell him she had other things to do, but in truth, she didn’t. Besides, hadn’t she spent nearly every minute since Sunday dinner
